The Center

At The Center, our Medication Services team provides compassionate, informed support for individuals ages 6 through geriatric as they explore treatment options. Our psychiatrist and APRN-level providers work closely with you to understand your needs, offer thorough medication assessments, and determine the most effective path forward.

We take time to explain each medication, why it’s prescribed, and how to use it safely. When needed, laboratory testing is completed to ensure your care remains both effective and personalized. For added convenience, our onsite Genoa Pharmacy makes picking up and managing prescriptions simple and stress-free.

Our Medication Services Include:

Consultation with the individual, family members, and primary care providers as needed
Medication evaluation and prescribing
Ongoing monitoring to ensure medications are safe and effective
Support with obtaining medications and completing any recommended lab work
Education for clients and families about how psychiatric medications work and what to expect
Coordination of care with other mental health and medical providers to ensure a comprehensive treatment approach

Psychiatric Medication Evaluation:

After completing your initial assessment at The Center, you may be referred to one of our medical providers for a psychiatric evaluation. Every client receiving medication services begins with a thorough evaluation conducted by a member of our medical team before starting or adjusting any psychiatric medication.

These evaluations are comprehensive and include a clear diagnosis with supporting information, a discussion of appropriate medication options and why they may be recommended, and individualized treatment suggestions based on your needs.

Medication evaluations are typically scheduled following your intake appointment and last about 60 minutes, giving our team time to understand your goals and ensure you feel informed and supported throughout the process.

Medicated-Assisted Treatment:

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Alcohol and Opioid Use Disorders combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral therapies to support the whole person. At The Center, MAT is part of a comprehensive approach to substance use treatment that helps stabilize brain chemistry, reduce cravings, and restore daily functioning—without producing the euphoric effects associated with alcohol or opioid use.

MAT can be a short- or long-term treatment option and is considered safe for extended use. Research shows that longer treatment durations often lead to better health outcomes. Medications such as buprenorphine help prevent withdrawal symptoms and cravings, while naltrexone helps reduce cravings and supports ongoing recovery. With these physiological symptoms managed, individuals are better able to focus on the emotional, behavioral, and social aspects of healing.

MAT is recognized as the gold standard for treating opioid and alcohol use disorders. It is also the first-line treatment for pregnant individuals with opioid use disorder, as it supports both maternal and fetal health. Medications may be provided in different forms such as tablets or films, depending on what is most appropriate for each person.

MAT has been shown to improve stability, increase treatment retention, and support individuals in maintaining employment and daily responsibilities.

If you’re interested in MAT services at The Center, you may walk in through Open Access Monday–Thursday from 8–4 to begin the process. During your visit, a member of our team will help schedule an intake assessment and connect you to one of our MAT providers for a medication evaluation. 8:00am - 4:00pm

During Open Access, you can walk in without an appointment to begin services. Our Care Coordination team will guide you through the intake process, complete necessary assessments, and help determine next steps. Medication services may be recommended after this process and an evaluation by a qualified provider.

Meet Our Psychiatrist

Dr. Stang earned degrees in chemistry and biology from Marymount College in Salina before completing medical school at KU Medical School and a psychiatry residency at the University of Iowa.

His interest in psychiatry grew during medical school, where he was drawn to understanding patients’ life experiences and seeing meaningful improvement through treatment. He primarily works with adults and older adults and has a special interest in depression and bipolar disorder.

In addition to being board certified in general psychiatry, he was also board certified in geriatric psychiatry for many years.

Dr. Stang first worked in Great Bend during medical school and joined the Center in 1993, where he continues to value the Center’s collaborative, team-based approach to care. He hopes every client leaves feeling listened to, supported, and genuinely cared for.
